100,000 British citizens make stand against Babar Ahmad human-rights injustice

Thursday, 03 November 2011 12:49
FOSIS, the national Muslim student body, has been campaigning on the human rights case of British-born Babar Ahmad, who is the longest-serving British-detainee, incarcerated for seven years without charge or trial and facing extradition to the United States. FOSIS has been campaigning for a fair trial in a British court for Mr Ahmad, given that his alleged offences have taken place in Britain. The campaign has involved ordinary but concerned citizens across the nation but particularly Islamic Societies, Muslim students, community leaders and mosques - in an "unprecedented movement" - as well as the support of individuals including lawyer Sir Geoffrey Bindman, journalist Victoria Britain, boxer Amir Khan and comedian Mark Thomas.
The campaign's epetition - for a fair trial in Britain for Babar Ahmad - has "remarkably" now reached 100,000 signatures, and continues to receive more hour-by-hour, from Britons across the country for the case to now be heard in Parliament.
Nabil Ahmed, President of FOSIS said today, "British human rights are in free-fall - it beggars belief that a British citizen is languishing in a British prison without charge or trial for seven years. Babar Ahmad's case is important not only because of his individual human rights but the human rights of our nation - if his alleged crimes took place in Britain, he must face a trial in Britain - and inspiringly, so far over 100,000 Britons have now signed in agreement with this."
"Whilst human rights are being reclaimed abroad - an inspiration to us all - we have seen a worrying level of apathy in Britain - but communities are now beginning to wake up. As this case is due to be debated in Parliament, it is our moment to redefine our resolve - civic society, British citizens and Parliament must now powerfully stand up for the inviolable rights that lay at the cornerstone of our society."
